http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2010/01/17/1263663021579.html i've been sick all weekend and couldn't get down there. Its a real shame the Tote was an icon of the northern suburbs and the Melbourne music scene. I was always more of a St Kilda kind of guy (St Kilda is dead now too) but the Tote was like a bit of St Kilda on the other side of the river. When compared to the other topics in this thread it put things into cold hard perspective but its still a shame to lose another cultural icon. We’re a long way from the rest of the world down here but we’ve always managed to create a local culture that has given us something to do when we haven’t had to sell our lives to pay the bills. Street violence has exploded in Melbourne fuelled by local governments that hand out late liquor licences to any moron and the availability of cheap amphetamines particularly to young people in their late teens and early 20s. The government has been completely unable to curb street violence, police treat offenders like they have a medical problem (which is true, they dump them at Emergency Departments suffering from drug induced psychosis) and magistrates give offenders a slap on the wrist due to diminished responsibility and the cycle continues. (small compensation to the people who’s lives they’ve ruined along the way) The Tote is the most visible victim of the government’s inability to react to what’s happening on the street. A cultural icon is gone and gone forever, I’m sure it will be replaced by a pizza bar or a wine bar that plays tasteless fusions of electronica and Beethoven. Fuck it’s depressing! |
