I know at least one of you has this. ;) Is it worth installing the RC for someone like me who's just a home user and uses his computer for web stuff and audio recording? Or should I just stick with XP for another year or two? Is it stable enough to be useful or am I just wasting my time?

Now you can't mean me, as I am a Mac user. :D

However, I will shock you and tell you I have it running in VMWare Fusion. Here's what I would suggest anyone who wants to try an operating system do:

1) Download VMWare Server (which is free)
http://www.vmware.com/products/server/

(don't get it confused with any other product, esp ESXi server, which will wipe your machine)
2) Install your guest operating system on top of it, such as Windows 7.

In effect you can then run Windows 7 on top of your Windows XP.

Initial thoughts: it runs much faster than Vista, hasn't crashed yet (although I only used it for a few hours last week), but isn't worth upgrading XP for, unless XP is being a bitch. XP is now reasonably stable, and you don't want to add more problems with drivers and incompatible programs.

VMWare (and virtualisation) was last years big thing in computing. It's mainly used for server products, as servers are seldom ever fully utilised, and so you can double up on functions by having different resources installed on the same server, on different operating systems, but the advantages for the home user are that you can run an operating system on top of the one you are currently running, test stuff out, and then if you don't like it, you just delete the guest operating system container, and you are back to normal. (Also, it's much harder for viruses to penetrate, etc)

This year's big thing is Cloud Computing.

Hmmm....sounds like a plan. :) Only thing I'd be worried about is compatibility with my audio applications, but I might just install it for a few days and try it out, then go back to XP if it's an epic fail.

Am finally getting around to setting up the new compy...Windows 7 is pretty nice so far. THe new interface is going to take some getting used to, but so far I haven't encountered any problems and it's running very smoothly.

Did you go VMWare? Or traditional?

Nah, just a straight up install...I figure if it sucks I'll just wipe it and go back to XP, not a huge deal. I like it so far tho, but I haven't tested it with all my audio software, so we'll see.

Coolio. Lemme know how it goes. I had a few issues with a copy of Adobe Master Suite CS4, but I got it done, after some perseverance.

Haven't tried my EMU 0404 USB soundcard with it yet, but last time there were massive problems.

I've just tried my Sennheiser HD650 phones through it, and it doesn't sound as good as good as it does on Win XP, plugged through the optical out on the Mac soundcard. Not a good start.

Hmm...I use my external USB Audio device for everything, so I have no idea if there's a difference in sound from onboard audio.

Well, then unless u have a monitoring audio program or a way of telling what the bitrate coming out of your soundcard is, you can't be sure of what's going on. Worst case, you are going to be throwing out what your on-board gives you. On Win7, I am going to be at least mentioning Foobar with the ASIO outputs as your Holy Grail. I am (admittedly waiting for a Manics docu to start on c4) listening to 4st 7lbs on the new drivers for my EMU 0404, through the headamp (which is about as good as I am going to get, as I can't justify a Zhalou DAC price) and it sounds not as good as on the Windows XP machine next to me, with the exact same setup.

So XP still has it on the 0404 drivers, but it depends on what you are using / what you are hearing.

What are you using as a soundcard? Maybe I can recommend. I spend a shedload of time worrying about this shit. (and I don't judge! == everyone is entitled to be wrong. J/K! :P)

P.S. This docu on the manics is beautiful. James is deadpan reading Richey's lyrics for Me and Stephen and Hawking. He is getting it wrong many times, and it is just such an interesting thing seeing him rather than go "fuck it, it will do", to "I've got to do it as he meant it."

The photos are stunning as well. The boys living in bunk beds. 4 of them. It makes me forget that many people live, in this area, now, like that.

It's an Edirol UA-5 USB audio capture...I just plug my Sennheiser HD-600's into it, and it sounds presumably as good as I'm going to get (esp. since we're dealing with mp3 or .ogg compressed sound to begin with)

Well, I just jumped on the bandwagon and ordered Windows 7. Basically, I've had such problems getting Vista to correctly update itself for the past several months, I had gotten to the point where I needed to reinstall Vista and hope it solves the problem, but I decided if I'm going to that much trouble I may as well wait and buy Win7. So far the reviews I've seen have been positive, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I've had good experiences with it so far. I got rid of most (if not all) of the "pretty" stuff to maximize performance so it's not as visually impressive, but it's nice to be running a good OS that was written after I lost my virginity.

Older women like to do it with punch cards! ;)

Well, I installed Win7 last night, and so far so good! After spending some time backing up files and installing a few drivers and things I was apparently missing under Vista, I decided to do the automated Vista-to-7 install (though I toyed with the possible wisdom of doing the full clean install, where you have to reinstall all your programs afterward). It took about 2 1/2 hours, was fully automated, and so far (having spent a few hours using the PC) it works flawlessly, and among other things fixed a compatibility glitch my iPod had under Vista. Keeping my fingers crossed....
