Since we have so many of them on here, it's probably prudent to start a compilation

Trevor Berwick, the last man to face (and defeat) Muhammad Ali, was murdered while attending a church in Jamaica.

Red Auerbach was a giant in the world of sports. He coached the Boston Celtics basketball team to nine NBA championships, and was either general manager or team president for another seven titles.
He revolutionised the world of sports, hiring Bill Russell as the first black head coach in any sport. He also introduced the world to such sports legends as Larry Bird, John Havlicek, and the great Russell himself.
Red Aurebach was 89 at the time of his death...

A leetle premature, as he has thirty days in which to appeal / escape, etc!

Ali, you and I both will be dead and in the grave before they put that sob to death.
What with appeals, delays, etc, it will be a cold day in hell before they hang him. I don't condone the death penalty, but in his case I might just make an exception.

Nope, all appeals must be made and completed within 30 days. You know this is an American backed thing, rather than the Iraqis, so the date of February they have him to hang is quite likely.

I actually love the fact that he requested to be shot, as it is the way a solider would die, and they are still gonna hang him :D

Apparently (according to Max Hastings in today's Guardian) the Americans are determined to expedite Saddam's execution so that he won't be able to testify at the forthcoming trial of 'Chemical Ali' (no relation!) to the rather embarrassing matter of collusion between the Bush and Hussein regimes in happier days!

I too am no supporter of the death penalty, primarily because violence only begets more violence, and you can be sure that this will apply if Saddam is executed.

But in the interests of fair play, if the Iraqi people are allowed to carry out this punishment, then I do think we should be allowed the satisfaction of seeing Bush and Blair (who together are responsible for the deaths of more innocent people than the Butcher of Baghdad) strung up for their war crimes, on Capitol Hill and outside the Banqueting Hall in Whitehall (where Cromwell had King Charles I beheaded for far lesser crimes) respectively!

I am going to write to Blair today (as I frequently do) and suggest this. So if my posts here suddenly stop you'll know that they've finally come to take me away! (That won't happen either, because the PM will almost certainly get a couple of thousand letters tomorrow all saying exactly the same thing. Years of experience as an activist have taught me that one's views are rarely as remarkable or original as one would like them to be! )

He (or rather his private office) used to regularly acknowledge receipt of my offerings (in a very formalised way). During the main period of hostilities in Iraq in 2003, when I sent him a different satirical postcard every day for several weeks, oddly enough I got no replies. I expect he was too busy dropping bombs on Baghdad. And in the last couple of years responses have been sporadic, to say the least.

I was very pleased, however, with the reply I received not so long ago to quite the rudest letter I have ever written to a senior politician (and they are mostly very rude). The reply from his secretary said (possibly tongue in cheek): 'the Prime Minister has asked me to thank you for your recent letter'!

On the other hand, this may mean that the only way to get a response from Mr Blair these days is to tell him to fuck off!

[Edit: I would like to say, in defence of some members of the species homo politico, that I had a truly excellent letter from Clare Short (when she made the grave mistake of resigning too late over Iraq) - it wasn't an individual letter, because I was one of a few thousand people who had written to her in despair at her behaviour (at the time she actually did resign), but it was, typically of her, a work of unimpeachable integrity and regret, and it was personally signed by her. It must have taken her hours to sign all those replies by hand, and I was truly impressed!]

Trivia du Jour: She is also the cousin of Martin Short (whose parents emigrated from N. Ireland to Canada).

Bonus Trivia: Martin Short was the featured guest on the Nov. 2002 Tonight Show with Jay Leno on which Beth was musical guest. :smartass:

I just heard a little while ago that CBS is reporting the death of 60 Minutes correspondent Ed Bradley. Bradley was with 60 Minutes ever since 1981, and was a very respected reporter. He interviewed everyone from Timothy McVeigh to Lena Horne.
Mr Bradley reportedly suffered from lieukemia, but never let it be known...even to fellow reporters. He was 65 years old at the time of his death.
